It’s been a rewarding week on two very different fronts of my work in music rights and licensing.
At The Ivors Academy, the new classical commissioning template agreements and guidance documents have now been published, timed to coincide with this year’s Ivors Classical Awards. These materials form part of the Academy’s continuing effort to support composers with practical, legally sound tools for navigating real-world commissioning relationships.
My thanks to Jenny Goodwin for her input at the start of the project back in the summer, and to Hannah Bujic, who joined the Academy as Classical and Jazz Consultant and was instrumental (pun intended) in reviewing the drafts and stress-testing them against real commissioning scenarios and people. I was very glad to see that everything passed muster and is now ready to be used.
Even if you’re not about to be commissioned, the guidance materials are well worth a look — they explain many aspects of commissioning, from legal and commercial terms to the practicalities of how these relationships work in real life. They’re available to Ivors Academy members, and there’s a free Discovery membership if you’d like to explore what the Academy offers.
Meanwhile, it was great to see Trespasses showing on Channel 4, featuring music licensed under agreements I handled via PTR Strategic, working with JL Media and the production company Wildgaze. The score was composed by David Holmes, whose Bow Down to the Exit Sign album I first discovered back in 2000. He’s had a pretty amazing creative journey since then, so it’s been especially satisfying to see things come full circle, working indirectly with his film scoring work through this project.
Thankfully (to anyone else who knows David’s work) Trespasses – the ‘film’ – was most definitely not ‘crap’ so there was no need at all to ‘slash the seats‘!
Together, these two projects are great examples of some of the best work I get to do: supporting creators through both policy and practice, from helping to set fair standards at sector level, to ensuring individual productions can use music confidently and correctly.
